“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved” (vv. ). - Romans Sinners cannot keep the law of God. For if, after all, there really was a God, I would be a fool not to believe in Him. So I knelt down and prayed; and as I prayed I just knew there was a God. Then I remembered the Gospel of John that I had read, and how it seemed to be written by an eye-witness, and I knew that if that was so, then Jesus was the Son of God and I was saved!

The Confession perhaps lacks the dramatic thrust of The Muse and The Miniaturist; it is quite a slow build to the revelation promised by the title. But Burton is a writer fully in control of her. During the Reformation the Church of England resisted attempts to have all references to private confession and absolution removed from the prayer book. In the 19th century, the Oxford Movement encouraged a revival of private confession, and it was accepted by some Anglo-Catholics. Many Anglicans, however, favour the general confession and absolution of the Communion service.

A continuous pattern of confession of doubt and unbelief will never establish our faith. We must believe in God and His Word if our faith is to be established. By making faith declarations or simply speaking that which we believe, we will find that it actually reinforces our . The four Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - include in their Passion/Resurrection narratives a series of episodes related to the appearances of the risen Christ to his disciples. In these episodes the disciples, after passing through a phase of doubt, unbelief, trouble, confusion and astonishment, come to the point of believing that Jesus has been risen indeed.

This brief read is a labyrinthine journey into Tolstoy’s struggles to find meaning in life, a reason to live, and the possibility of a God behind it all. His keen insights into his own doubts and nihilism are especially sharp, and my favorite part of the book.

A Brief Statement of Faith is still relatively young, twenty-seven years since its official adoption into the Book of Confessions. It would be folly, however, to expect A Brief Statement to be the last word any more than it was appropriate to expect the Westminster Standards to be sufficient as the last word of the Reformed tradition.
